Zinfandel

Originally from California, United States

America's grape by adoption (it's genetically identical to Croatia's Primitivo). At its best: jammy blackberry, spice, briar, and a rustic, slightly wild quality. Old vines in Dry Creek Valley and Lodi produce the best examples.

Zinfandel is known for producing robust red wines with notes of blackberry, raspberry, plum, and often a spicy or peppery finish. Old vine Zinfandel typically offers more concentrated fruit flavors and complexity.
