Calories in a glass of wine
Mostly the alcohol, not the sugar — which is the opposite of what most people assume.
A 150ml glass of dry wine at 13% ABV is roughly 110-125 calories, and around 90% of that comes from the alcohol rather than the sugar. A bottle is roughly five times a glass.
That ratio is the useful part. Cutting residual sugar barely moves the number on a dry wine; cutting alcohol moves it a lot. A 9% off-dry Riesling can carry fewer calories than a 15% dry red despite tasting sweet.

150ml at 12.5% ABV · about 531 kcal per 750ml bottle
Roughly 99% of that is the alcohol rather than the sugar. This is why a bone-dry wine at 15% is not the low-calorie option people assume — cutting sugar barely moves the number, cutting alcohol does.
How the number is worked out
Alcohol contributes about 7.1 calories per gram, and ethanol weighs 0.789 grams per millilitre. Multiply the pour by the ABV to get the volume of alcohol, then by those two figures. Residual sugar adds 4 calories per gram on top.
The residual sugar figures used here are typical for each style rather than a measurement of your bottle. Two dry whites from the same grape can differ by 10 g/L, and the label almost never says — so treat the sugar half as an estimate and the alcohol half as reliable.
What actually changes the number
Pour size, first. A restaurant 175ml pour is 17% more wine than a 150ml one, and a generous home pour can be 250ml — nearly double. Nothing else on this page has that much leverage.
ABV, second. The gap between a 12% and a 15% wine is roughly 25% more calories at the same pour, which is a bigger difference than most people expect between two glasses that look identical.
Sweetness, a distant third for dry wines and a real factor for dessert wines. A 100ml glass of Sauternes carries meaningful sugar calories; a dry white does not.
Questions people ask
How many calories in a glass of wine?
Around 110-125 for a 150ml glass of dry wine at 13% ABV. Fuller reds at 14.5% run closer to 140, and sweet dessert wines are higher again despite usually being served in smaller glasses.
How many calories in a bottle of wine?
Roughly 550-650 for a standard dry wine, scaling with ABV. Multiply a 150ml glass by five.
Is red or white wine higher in calories?
Whichever has more alcohol, which usually means the red. Colour itself makes no difference — a 12% red is lighter than a 14% white.
Does dry wine have fewer calories than sweet?
Usually, but less than people expect. Alcohol carries most of the calories in any wine that is not a dessert wine, so a bone-dry 15% red can outweigh an off-dry 9% Riesling.
